Free Information- RoHS
In an effort to reduce the use of hazardous material
in electronic equipment as well as allow for additional recycling
opportunities for these products, the European Union has initiated
a Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and a directive on Waste
Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). RoHS bans the use of lead,
cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB)
and polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDE). The directives associated
with the banning of these products will go into effect July 1, 2006.
WEEE is aimed at reducing the hazardous material content in electronic
products as well as increasing recycling efforts for these products.
For many, it involves converting from
tin/lead plating to a compliant substance or moving toward a lead
free solder for products such as cables, relays, power systems, microwave
devices and more. Movement toward these types of products will be
required to continue business in Europe.
